I grew up sewing,
learning from my Grandmother, an expert seamstress.
I lived in houses built by my Grandfather, a master carpenter.
We lived in the country and had a big garden.
I went to private school on scholarship and was very well educated.
My Great Aunts were quilters, and I slept under quilts made by them.
I made my own clothes through highschool and college,
and later my daughter's clothes through her childhood.
My professional career has alternated in long cycles
between Science and Art.
I have a PhD in Chemistry (atomic spectroscopy)
and worked in government research laboratories.
I have also been a silver and gold smith and jewelry maker in Santa Fe.
I make bed quilts, art quilts, art wear, and extravagant art garments.
I consider art quilts and art garments a way to express
iconography, myth, metaphor, and poetry without words.
I love bright colors, rich fabrics, and fine workmanship.
I am intrigued by complex surface development through patchwork,
appliqué, stitchery, embroidery, quilting, embellishment, and collage.
I strive for a sense of elegance and natural harmony in my finished work.
Some of my work is very structured and some is very freeform.
In either case, I begin with an initial inspiration and work
intuitively, allowing the piece to evolve during the creative process.
